In a way, Poco is the rebel among Xiaomi’s sub-companies – the company is primarily aimed at young people with its online-only shopping concept and aggressive pricing policy. With the models Poco F4 and Poco X4 GT, however, a little calm returns to the Chinese youth room. The new phones look tame, but offer grown-up processor upgrades.

Today, June 23, 2022, Xiaomi is trying to further extend its lead in the mid-range segment with two new smartphones. The manufacturer is pushing the Poco sub-brand, which presented the Poco F4 and Poco X4 GT models via live stream. In terms of price, the manufacturer places both cell phones at just under 400 USD and is thus attacking Samsung’s Galaxy A53 series and its own Redmi Note lineup .

Below we tell you as compactly as possible what you can expect from the new smartphones. Basically, you can only buy Poco smartphones on the Internet and experience has shown that the update policy is rather poor . Since Poco does not provide any precise information in its press release, the current minimum of two years of Android updates and three years of security patches can be assumed.

Poco F4 with Snapdragon SoC from 2019

According to the naming, Poco brings out the basic version of the Poco F4 GT with the F4, which really convinced us in the test . Unfortunately, the cell phones have little in common, because the Poco F4 uses the Snapdragon 870, a Qualcomm processor that is already quite outdated. This is manufactured in a 7 nanometer process and supports 5G – in the F4 it is also paired with a 3.112 mm  vapor chamber for cooling and with 6 or 8 gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory.

Visually, the F4 is quite reserved in the colors grey, black and green, while a dominant triple camera stands out on the back. Fortunately, its main camera uses an image stabilizer and has a resolution of 64 megapixels. Alternatively, you can switch to 8 megapixels in ultra wide angle and 2 megapixels for macros. On the front there is a particularly thin and 6.67 AMOLED display that repeats images at 120 Hertz. The thin ground glass helps Poco bring their thinnest smartphone to date onto the market with the F4, which is only 7.7 millimeters thick.

When it comes to quick charging , Poco follows current trends and integrates Xiaomi’s 67-watt turbo charging into the smartphone, which is said to be particularly efficient and fast thanks to middle-middle-tab technology. According to the press release, the cell phone fully charges in 38 minutes, with a battery capacity of 4,500 mAh.

For the variant with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, you pay 399.90 USD from June 27 at 1 p.m. – you have to spend 449.90 USD for more memory. Or you can still use the early bird price until July 2 at 1 p.m., which reduces the costs to 349.90 USD or 399.90 USD.

A more up-to-date SoC, the MediaTek Dimensity 8100, is used in the cheaper Poco X4 GT, which is manufactured using the more modern 5-nanometer process. At a similar level of performance as the F4, there is a choice of 128 or 256 GB of internal memory, but fortunately the RAM is fixed at 8 gigabytes.

The first special feature can be found in the display: Although there is only a 6.6-inch LC display here, you can view content in 144 Hertz and in 20.5:9 cinema format. Sony in particular currently relies on narrow and high displays. Although the camera of the X4 GT with 64 MP in the main sensor, 8 MP in the ultra wide angle and 2 MP for macros looks identical at first glance to the F4, the optical image stabilization of the main camera is missing.

In comparison, the X4 GT offers a larger battery with 5,080 mAh, which can be charged with the same power. Here, however, the charging time from 0 to 100 is 46 minutes, which is apparently due to the larger battery.

If you want to buy the X4 GT, you pay 379.90 USD for 128 gigabytes and 429.90 USD for 256 gigabytes of internal memory from July 4 at 1 p.m. You can also secure an early bird price of 299.90 or 349.90 USD until July 9 at 1 p.m.
